Benjamin Shogan, MD, specializes in the surgical care of patients with colorectal diseases and disorders. His particular interest is in colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis and anorectal disease. He routinely uses advanced minimally invasive techniques, such as robotic surgery, to decrease postoperative pain and shorten recovery times.
Dr. Shogan's research interest is in understanding how intestinal bacteria can cause gastrointestinal diseases. He runs an active research laboratory investigating how manipulations of the gut microbiome lead to fewer postoperative complications and better outcomes after surgery for cancer. His ultimate research goal is to translate his leading edge research to improve patients' lives.
