My name is Dr. Peev. I'm a heart surgeon at the University of Chicago. I take care of patients with heart disease. My particular specialty is complex aortic pathology and minimally invasive robotic cardiac surgery.
I think, in a way, becoming a physician is a calling. I grew up in a family of physicians. I still have the lectures from 1922 from my great-grandfather—lectures in surgery. I grew up in a household filled with stories about operations, patients, and pathology. All those inspiring stories shaped my desire and wish to become a physician and give back to people.
The University of Chicago is a very special place for me. As a matter of fact, this is where I trained. I developed a very unique relationship with the team as well as the patients.
I would like to give back to the community. When I was a little boy growing up in a poor socialist country, a mission from Switzerland came. My mother, a physician, helped with translations. Subsequently, they brought us to Switzerland, which completely changed our lives. The only way I see to repay the gift that was given to us 35 years ago is to give back to the community—both in Chicago and beyond.
There are many unique experiences in my profession. Every day, every encounter with a new patient, is a unique experience. But something that is very close to my heart is my work in Africa. At least twice a year, I join an elite international team to help people there by performing heart operations and assisting local teams in building their own programs.
I believe this is a way to give back beyond our city, state, and country—to help people in need who don't have access to the same medical opportunities we do.

A compassionate caregiver, Dr. Peev believes every patient deserves personalized attention and the highest quality care — before, during and after surgery. He treats each patient like a member of his own family, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.
Dr. Peev’s commitment to helping others extends around the globe. Several times a year, he leads international teams to provide life-saving heart surgeries in Africa and helps local medical teams build sustainable heart programs.
Because Dr. Peev is a dedicated advocate for patient care, he continues to performs extensive research that explores the most effective, least invasive treatments available for heart disease. He spent years conducting leading-edge research funded by the Department of Defense and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), working on device designs and developments used to improve minimally invasive heart surgery techniques. His current research focuses on enhancing care for patients with aortic disease and those undergoing robotic heart surgery. Beyond his clinical work, he is a devoted teacher and mentor, providing guidance and training the next generation of heart surgeons.

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
