My name is Amelia Kellar. I'm a pediatric gastroenterologist. I also see adult patients, specifically with inflammatory bowel disease. So this is Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. I'm also the Director of the Pediatric Intestinal Ultrasound Program.
I think I've always been fascinated by physiology and the physiology underlying chronic disease. I used to actually be a researcher predominantly. And then I found that while I was doing experiments, they were very interesting. But I really missed seeing the application of my research and how it was affecting patient care. So I decided to do the best of both worlds and to become a physician and a researcher.
I knew instantly, actually, when I came here that this was going to be the place for me. I was really looking for a team of people who were really passionate about what they were doing. I was looking for a team of people who had all kinds of different expertise because I wanted to be able to learn from the team that I worked with. One of my big goals is to really revolutionize the way that we care for children. And I felt like that would be something I could help contribute to here at Comer.
As a physician, I never wanted to be someone that would tell someone what I think they should do. I really wanted my job to be more of an educator, so helping to provide patients and families with information so that they could make the decision that's best for them.
So one of the things that I also really love about intestinal ultrasound is I feel like, in the moment, I can show patients their disease or their remission. We can have a conversation. And they're armed with the information to make decisions about their therapy. So I feel like it's actually a two-way conversation.
I'm one of very few gastroenterologists actually in the country and within North America who performs intestinal ultrasound. So I use it as a monitoring tool to monitor my patients with inflammatory bowel disease. I'm trained in both pediatric and adult gastroenterology, specifically in inflammatory bowel disease. So one of the things I love about it, and I hope that my patients love about it too, is that I get to see them as children, and then I get to follow them throughout adulthood. So I think that also really gives me a unique perspective on their disease management.

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
