Radiology & Imaging

Abdominal imaging is a specialty within radiology, which provides diagnostic imaging and intervention of the abdomen and pelvis. This includes the genitals, urinary organs and gastrointestinal tract for abdominal and pelvic disorders.

We provide clinical services in ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), gastrointestinal radiology and genitourinary radiology. In addition, we are responsible for imaging-guided biopsies using ultrasound, MRI and CT. 

Most imaging examinations are ordered by a referring physician and scheduled according to the urgency of the study and the patient's availability. Some examinations require patient preparation, and patients are notified of this prep when their appointment is scheduled. 

All exam requests in CT, MRI and gastrointestinal radiology are reviewed in advance by a radiologist and tailored to provide the greatest information possible in the safest manner for the patient. 

We are deeply involved in research, bridging the basic sciences and clinical realms. And our institution has a long history of working with other partners.

Our breast imaging team provides excellent, comprehensive screening and diagnostic breast health care for our patients.

We provide a full spectrum of mammographic, ultrasound, MRI and interventional procedures. Our screening clinic provides service to the surrounding community. We are a referral center for the evaluation of patients with difficult diagnostic problems and those with newly-diagnosed breast cancer. 

We work collaboratively with the breast medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons and pathologists.

Our research involves collaboration among breast radiologists, medical physicists, pathologists and oncologists. Much of our research focuses on imaging of early breast cancer with MRI. 

Our musculoskeletal radiology team provides state-of-the-art imaging of disorders of the bones, joints and associated soft tissues using a wide variety of methods, including conventional radiography, computed tomography (CT), ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

We work closely with other physicians specializing in disease processes of the bones, joints and associated soft tissues. Conventional radiography is performed on-site by a team of specialized orthopaedic radiology technologists. 

We have extensive experience with diagnosing all varieties of disease of the musculoskeletal system, including trauma and sports medicine, arthritis, and bone and soft tissue tumors. 

As part of the musculoskeletal oncology team, we work closely with orthopaedic surgeons, pathologists and other physicians to provide excellence in care to patients with benign and malignant tumors. In addition to performing minimally invasive bone and soft tissue biopsies under ultrasonographic and CT guidance, we also use radiofrequency ablation to treat painful lesions of bone, both benign and malignant. 

We use MR arthrography to get the most detailed imaging evaluation of joints possible. 

We also provide interventional procedures such as: 

• Arthrography of prosthetic joints
• Aspiration of cysts or infected fluid collections
• Injection of medications into joints

Our neuroradiology team performs imaging of the central nervous system in both adult and pediatric patients.

This includes CT and MRI of the brain, spine, head and neck, as well as diagnostic angiography and interventional neuroradiology. 

Our nuclear medicine team offers the full spectrum of general nuclear and molecular imaging exams, from standard bone and thyroid imaging to red cell mass calculations and several radioimmunotherapies.

We also offer a wide variety of pediatric studies — supervised by a pediatric-trained staff — and specialize in pediatric renal imaging.

Our state-of-the-art PET center was the first permanent site in the Chicagoland area to offer hybrid PET/CT inline imaging. Since its inception several years ago, we have been at the forefront of neurologic and whole body oncologic PET/CT clinical and research imaging. We were among the first in Illinois to offer PSMA PET imaging for prostate cancer.

Our nuclear cardiology clinic offers the latest in molecular cardiac imaging.

Our pediatric radiologists perform and interpret imaging studies on children, attempting to achieve the best diagnostics with the lowest possible radiation dose and intervention to the patient.

We combine compassionate clinical work with high academic standards — performing research and teaching residents, medical students and colleagues. We perform an average of 40,000 imaging studies per year.

The pediatric surgery, orthopaedics, hematology/oncology, gastroenterology, urology, nephrology and cardiology services account for varied and complex pediatric cases.

We perform conventional radiography examinations and grid-controlled pulsed fluoroscopy studies using very low doses of radiation. Ultrasonographic studies are done by dedicated pediatric sonographers. 

All of our nurses, technologists and administrative staff are pediatric professionals dedicated to assisting patients and families. And our child life experts assist in preparing patients and families by educating them about our procedures and equipment.

Our thoracic imaging team provides state-of-the-art imaging and interpretation of thoracic diseases in close collaboration with internists, pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons.

Consultations and second opinions are also available on request for patients who have had imaging studies performed at other institutions.

We provide training for residents and fellows in the department of radiology, as well as trainees from other clinical departments.
