My name is Phillip LoSavio. The proper term for my specialty is otolaryngology, head and neck surgery, but most people know it as ear, nose, and throat or ENT. Essentially, we cover anything above the shoulders here except for the brain and the eyes, and take care of all parts of people's health related to those areas of the body.
Thinking back, I wanted to be a physician going all the way back to middle school, so probably around the age of 13. I think it originally just seemed like something really interesting to do. I was always into science, but I think as I got older, really, I mean, at its core, I just enjoy talking to people and learning about their lives. And that's probably actually what I like most about my job, is just coming into a room and obviously hearing about why they're there and how I can help them, but just learning about them personally. And I find that the most motivating reason to come to work every day.
This is a very unique, special place. A lot of people will say that. And I think you only really appreciate it, once you work here. We take care of the most challenging cases in the world, and I think that's like a privilege to be able to do that. I think my colleagues are just really inspiring people to be around. Everyone here is working, I think, very altruistically. And in a world where you don't always see that, to be able to come up with solutions to the most impossible problems.
So when patients come here, a lot of times, it's because they're on their third or fourth opinion and they're here looking for hope. And we try to offer that to them.
I try to understand what people need. It's not what I necessarily am trying to say they have to have in terms of care. So at the end of the day, one of the most important skills is being able to listen to someone, and even more importantly than that is to make them feel listened to. No matter what type of service or where they're going to get help, you don't want to go in somewhere and feel like someone is not listening to what you're saying. And so I really try to do that every day when I'm talking to people and trying to hear about their problems. And then, once I try to get a sense of what they really need and what they want, we we try to match that with whatever we're able to provide.

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
