[MUSIC PLAYING] My name is Perry Morocco. I am one of the pediatric hematologist and oncologist here, so I specialize in seeing pediatric patients with blood disorders as well as cancers. My clinical focus is in patients with benign bleeding disorders or anemias, as well as I see patients with leukemia and lymphoma. My research interest is in medical education. Growing up, I always knew I was interested in the sciences, and I was originally actually thinking to end up working in a lab and doing clinical research.
I ended up doing a lot of volunteering and shadowing while in college that really convinced me that the in-person interactions and caring for patients was really what I wanted to do long-term. And caring for patients with cancer, I performed both lumbar punctures as well as bone marrow biopsies. Here at the University of Chicago, we are also a member of the Children's Oncology group, which is a large international collaborative effort to both improve and optimize the care of patients with cancer.
We have many active clinical trials here and many opportunities for families to enroll and potentially receive a new and upcoming treatment. We're working at the University of Chicago and working with patients from all walks of life, from both the suburbs, rural areas, as well as other communities has really helped provide a comprehensive view and what kind of is necessary to guide patients and their families through their journeys with cancer.
I always tell them, you know, when I meet them for the first time that this is going to be a marathon, not a sprint. But during that time we have multiple care teams that will be there to support them and help them through a very challenging and difficult journey. My philosophy of care really involves taking a very comprehensive look at both what the patient and their family needs. Some of our cancer treatments can take years of treatment, which when you're talking to a young child or a teenager is really going to have a large effect on their life.
So really thinking about and taking into consideration what are their goals, whether it to be able to attend a family reunion, or able to go back to participating in sports, I think is very important as we help work with them through this challenging journey.

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
