[MUSIC PLAYING] My name is Gaurvav Upadhyay. I'm an electrophysiologist. I'm a cardiologist, who specializes in heart rhythm disturbances, pacemakers, and defibrillators. I've been in practice here, at the University of Chicago, for just about four years. And I've had the chance to take care of patients here, as well as in Boston. Fundamentally, being a physician is something that appeals to me because it lets me put together an interest in science, as well as connecting with people.
When you have a conversation with someone about their heart, it's visceral. It's something that people understand. And I've always enjoyed the opportunity to connect with people in an authentic, and an immediate, way. What we do is to try to understand arrhythmic or electrical disturbances of the heart. So the heart's an electrical organ. We think about plumbing, but it's also got electricity as well. And so if the heart beats too fast or too slow, we help try to develop an intervention, be it medications, a procedure-- we do procedures called ablation procedures, where we actually work inside the heart-- or use technology like pacemakers or defibrillators to try to address that rhythm disturbance.
The most important thing about the care that we provide is that the patient feels that they're being helped in a way that's personal and specific to them, and that we're helping them get the most out of their life. It's not just about being in the hospital, or being healthy at home, or a healthy lifestyle. It's the idea that we have a certain potential, all of us. And we need to be able to rise up to that potential. And illness is a big barrier for that. So if we can address one barrier, then we can help people, kind of, live to their fullest. And that's fundamentally what I think we should do.

Our list of accepted insurance providers is subject to change at any time. You should contact your insurance company to confirm UChicago Medicine participates in their network before scheduling your appointment. Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
