My name is Dr. Andrew Fisher. I'm an Obstetrician Gynecologist here at University of Chicago. And I'm also actively engaged in our transgender care programs here.
Part of the reason I became an obstetrician gynecologist specifically is because I was raised in an environment with a lot of women. And so I developed a sort of relationship that allowed me to kind of better understand some of the experiences that they were going through and how their health care can impact what's going on in their lives.
One of the things I think that makes UChicago Medicine so special is that they truly embrace a commitment to taking care of all people who have unique circumstances or come from difficult home or social situations. We also know, in particular, when thinking about the LGBTQ community and specifically the trans and gender diverse community, that it's hard for those patients to find a safe medical home.
We know that over a third of those patients face varying degrees of health care anxiety because of prior traumatic experiences that they've had with health care organizations in the past. And one of the things that University of Chicago Medicine has been so great about is making sure that we have the tools that we need to create that safe space for those patients to come for care.
So here at University of Chicago Medicine, we have a great multidisciplinary group of physicians who provide all sorts of gender affirming treatments, mental health treatments, hormone therapy, the full array of surgical needs that a patient may need while transitioning. We also have a commitment to taking care of the basic health care needs of all people. And part of that involves making sure that we have a team of affirming physicians who can provide the most basic health care needs, as well as the most complex health care needs that our patients may face regardless of their gender identity.
I take care of people who are pregnant, and I take care of people who are struggling with things like pelvic pain or endometriosis. I also take care of a lot of people who identify as trans, non-binary, or other have other gender identities. And so whatever kind of medical treatments we can offer, it's important to remember that we have to meet them where they are.
For example, we take care of a lot of people who are pregnant. But going through that experience alone. So how do we have to individualize their care to make sure they get the best health outcomes with the resources that they have available to them?
Andrew Fisher, MD, specializes in obstetric and gynecologic medicine and delivers comprehensive well women care. Dr. Fisher treats a wide range of conditions affecting women, including abnormal uterine bleeding, opioid use disorder in pregnancy, hormone therapy for gender affirming transgender patients and more.
Dr. Fisher is also an expert in transabdominal cerclage (TAC), a procedure that strengthens the cervix during pregnancy for women who have a weakened or short cervix to prevent premature labor.
To elevate his clinical practice, Dr. Fisher evaluates new and improved treatments and techniques to enhance the lives of his patients. His recent research has investigated the risk factors associated with fertility preservation in transgender patients. Dr. Fisher’s work has been published in several highly respected peer-reviewed journals, including Fertility and Sterility and Biophysical Journal.
