UChicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Center

Does this program determine if I can receive a transplant?

No. This program does not make a "yes" or "no" decision on transplant. The decision about pursuing transplant is made among you and your primary oncologist and approved by discussion in a group of transplant physicians.

There are criteria established for safely pursuing transplant. For some patients, the doctor may have concerns that transplant may be more difficult or dangerous. The TOP clinic visit can then more thoroughly assess health to help you and your doctor make a more informed decision. We assess your mental and physical strengths and vulnerabilities to gauge the safety of transplant. We also offer suggestions about ways to address or prevent health issues.

Will I get a new doctor?

No. The objective of the TOP clinic team is not to replace your doctor. Rather, our team will make recommendations to you and your current doctor through a standardized assessment to safely pursue transplant. Patients may also be seen after transplant and given additional recommendations.

What is different about this from the testing I have already had?

The TOP clinic will not only review this testing but evaluate your health in global way focusing on how to prevent problems after transplant. The TOP team also meets together to develop an individualized plan for every patient to add to what your doctor has recommended.

When and why was the TOP clinic started?

In 2013, UChicago Medicine committed to develop a program to optimize patient health rather than just estimate risks of transplant.

Transplant is now being used more and more for older patients and those with many health conditions. Transplantation can be more difficult for these patients. The needs of older patients are very different than the needs of children and young adults. We established this program to improve the success rate of transplant in our older patients.
