Joan Bigane, RN, elderly male patient and James Wallace, MD, in geriatric oncology clinic
Nurse Joan Bigane, RN, standing, and James Wallace, MD, right, co-director of the SOCARE program, meet with a patient in clinic.

The UChicago Medicine geriatric oncology team extends to include experienced advanced practice nurses with expertise in geriatrics and oncology, as well as a special interest in helping patients navigate the care process. Our social workers also play an active role in patient care.

We're also home to one of the select few geriatric oncology fellowship training programs in the United States. Geriatric oncology fellows are physicians who have completed medical residency training who desire focused education in the care of elderly cancer patients. We also have a palliative medicine fellow who works in our clinic. Fellows are key members of the SOCARE treatment team.
