I came to the Midwest and the City of Chicago from the beautiful Islands of Hawaii over 30 years ago. And I came here not for the weather, but I came here because of the reputation of the University of Chicago.
The University of Chicago is an academic powerhouse, the home of Nobel Laureates. This is where the atomic age actually began. It began under our football field, Stagg Football Field, where the University of Chicago was one of the original members of the Big Ten and won championships back at the very beginning, the birthplace of college football.
In fact, Jay Berwanger, one of our half-backs, won the first Heisman Trophy back in 1935. What brought me to the University of Chicago was its reputation. But what has kept me here for all these years has been the warmth and collegiality that I found amongst my fellow physicians and staff. And it's what we hope you will also find that keeps you here at the university.
My specialty in sports medicine surgery is minimally invasive surgery-- arthroscopy-- of the joints that you would typically injure at work or play. And that would be the shoulder, occasionally the elbow, such as the Tommy John operation for pitchers. Hips, which have become a real issue for a lot of our younger and older athletes, labral tears in the hip. We can fix these with the arthroscope in a minimally invasive fashion.
The knees, of course, meniscus tears, ACL tears, that's pretty much our bread and butter and what we cut our teeth on. But also the ankle and other smaller joints, although the ankle is one of those joints where we often can treat it non-surgically.
My philosophy of care is simply that of the university, which is to combine the very best cutting-edge technology, the very highest levels of skill and treatment with that compassionate, caring touch, with the human touch. It's that combination, that unique combination that really separates our institution from the other wonderful academic institutions.
