[AUDIO LOGO] My name is Kabirat "Ola" Tepede, but I go by Ola. Most people call me Ola. I am a midwife at the University of Chicago. A midwife is someone that has an advanced degree, either a master's or doctoral degree, that provides low-risk care to pregnant people and women overall. We do annual exams, prenatal care, childbirth, education, and simple gynecological issues.
That is a long story. I think I experienced my first birth around age 13. I'm originally from Nigeria. My neighbor was a midwife. And I was always just fascinated, fascinated by the body, what the body could do overall. And usually when it was time for the delivery, I would be told to leave the room. But my first birth that I experienced around the age of 13 was very fast. And I was there, and I was just amazed. And I was like, I want to do this. I want to help people when they're in this vulnerable position.
So since then, after school, as soon as I dropped my bag, I ran to my neighbor. I became like a helper for the new mothers. I would help, and I devoted a lot of time. So of course, when I came to the United States, when I was thinking of what I wanted to do, I was like, midwife. Being a midwife would be the best. Of course, I started on another background, but I kept my interest in the field by becoming a doula. I volunteered as a doula for like two years before going back to midwifery school.
University of Chicago's commitment to excellence is what made me choose University of Chicago. I actually studied here as a nurse on the ambulatory side, and then I became a nurse in the labor and delivery unit. I worked as a nurse in the labor and delivery unit for like six years, and I just knew that the commitment to excellence is top notch. We always want to improve on already like a great care. We're always looking for, what's the evidence, how can we improve patient satisfaction, how can we embrace other people's culture, how can we be inclusive. So for that reason, I love University of Chicago.
When I have patients, I do teaching. We know we're going to do the right things and all of that, but I always want to make sure that if my patients were to end up somewhere else, not University of Chicago, because patients can end up like in an emergency room. I want them to be able to advocate for themselves. So each visit, I'm always looking for opportunities to educate and empower people because when you feel empowered, you can pretty much stand up and advocate for yourself.

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
