Caroline Thomas, MD, is a board-certified anesthesiologist who has specialized training in obstetric anesthesia. Dr. Thomas has expertise in providing care for medically and/or surgically complex obstetrics patients. She delivers pain management and anesthesia services to pregnant women during labor and delivery. She provides a variety of types of pain relief for labor and anesthesia for cesarean deliveries. She is also a team member of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease team and the Cardio-Obstetrics team, which aim to help pregnant patients with cardiovascular disease. Dr. Thomas works closely with obstetricians and midwives to ensure the safety and comfort of both the mother and baby during the labor and delivery process.
Along with her commitment to her clinical practice, Dr. Thomas uses research to improve care for women in labor. She investigates the evaluation of heart function during labor, racial disparities in the provision of obstetric anesthesia care, how the provision of obstetric anesthesia impacts fetal outcomes, and anesthesia-related medical education topics. Her work has been published in several peer-review journals, including JAMA Open Network, Anesthesia & Analgesia Practice and International Journal of Obstetric Anesthesiology.
