Hi. My name is Betty Fan. I am a fellowship trained breast surgeon here at the University of Chicago. I take care of breast cancer patients and also women with breast problems. I chose to become a physician because I was always pretty good at the sciences, and then I also really liked to fix things with my hands and fix problems. And so it just kind of fit together. I chose to come to University of Chicago because I really enjoyed the other colleagues that I work with. We really all focus on elevating patient care here. And so it just kind of fit with my philosophy about how to take care of patients. In general, the way I like to take care of patients is that I recognize a lot of times, they're coming to see me after a really, really scary and hard diagnosis. Oftentimes, the word cancer scares people quite a bit, and they're nervous. And so the biggest thing that I want to do is try to make it as easy for them when they come for their consultation, to explain things clearly to them, so they can understand what's going on but then also participate in the decisions for treatment. As a breast surgeon, I perform all the full spectrums of breast surgeries, and I work very closely with our very talented plastic surgeons if reconstruction is needed. Some of the surgeries that I perform are excisional biopsies of the breast, lumpectomies, mastectomies, nipple-sparing mastectomies, aesthetic flat closures, sentinel lymph node biopsies, and even axillary lymph node dissections when needed. And we do do axillary reverse mapping here at University of Chicago to decrease our risk of lymphedema. I think the biggest thing is that cancer care is really rapidly evolving, and it's really become more and more tailored to the patient and the type of cancer. And so I think at University of Chicago, it's really nice to work with a team of multidisciplinary practitioners to really help tailor and find the right treatment for patients.
Betty Fan, DO, is a highly skilled surgeon who specializes in breast surgery with expertise in treating both benign and malignant breast diseases. Dr. Fan's clinical practice includes comprehensive surgical procedures, such as breast conservation surgery, oncoplastics surgery, mastectomies, sentinel lymph node biopsies, and axillary lymph node dissections with axillary reverse mapping. She routinely works with her plastic surgery colleagues to offer immediate reconstruction for mastectomy patients and in incorporating immediate lymphatic repair (ILR), otherwise known commonly as LYMPHA, for patients needing extensive axillary lymph node surgery. Dr. Fan understands how personal these diagnoses are, and she is highly regarded for her compassionate approach to patient care. She is an advocate for patient education and shared-decision making.
She has published several research articles and been an invited speaker numerous times on topics that impact breast cancer patients. Dr. Fan’s research is especially interested in patient outcomes and de-escalation of therapy when appropriate.
Additionally, Dr. Fan is teaching and mentoring the next generation of surgeons by working directly with residents and fellows, providing surgical training on breast surgery. She serves on several national committees focused on improving surgical progress and innovation.

UChicago Medicine is committed to fostering a corporate culture of ethical behavior and integrity in all matters related to compliance with the laws and regulations that govern the delivery of healthcare. This aspiration is central to supporting patient care, research, and teaching at UChicago Medicine.
Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
