University of Chicago Medicine and Chicago Lakeshore Hospital to form adult psychiatry teaching affiliation
March 4, 2016
University of Chicago Medicine and Chicago Lakeshore Hospital are forming a new collaboration that advances psychiatric teaching programs and provides comprehensive clinical educational experience for UChicago Medicine residents and medical students, while simultaneously enhancing care for both organizations' patients.
The affiliation establishes a new adult inpatient psychiatric service for UChicago Medicine at Lakeshore, building on a longstanding partnership that includes existing teaching services in child and adolescent psychiatry and chemical dependence. Residents and students of the UChicago's Department of Psychiatry and Pritzker School of Medicine will hold clinical rotations at Lakeshore, under the supervision of UChicago Medicine faculty.
"The new expanded affiliation with Chicago Lakeshore Hospital will provide an outstanding learning environment for University of Chicago Medicine residents and Pritzker School of Medicine students," said Daniel Yohanna, MD, vice chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at UChicago Medicine. "They will have the opportunity to see a wide variety of patients from across Chicago at a major free-standing psychiatric hospital with a long-established record, and garner the experience they need to be fully prepared psychiatrists in our dynamic medical specialty."
Under the new partnership, UChicago Medicine patients transferred to Lakeshore who require inpatient psychiatric treatment will be treated on the new services under the care of UChicago faculty. These faculty will supervise rotating medical students and residents, who will be trained in advanced diagnostic methodology, evidence-based clinical treatment, and care of patients with complex clinical needs.
"This is quite a significant occasion for both organizations to strategically combine our resources in order to help train some of the most highly qualified residents in psychiatric medicine. The outstanding educational standing of the University, along with our leading role as a psychiatric provider in the area, is the best conceivable foundation for this partnership," said Patrick Moallemian, chief executive officer of Chicago Lakeshore Hospital. "We are very fortunate to be working with superb educators and administration at the University of Chicago whom identified the teaching opportunities at Lakeshore early on and persisted with our collective vision to bring this day to reality."
"Patients at Lakeshore will receive the highest quality of care available as we incorporate the research, academic, and clinical interests of the University of Chicago Medicine Department of Psychiatry into our mission of serving the greater Chicagoland community," said Peter Nierman, MD, chief medical officer of Chicago Lakeshore Hospital and assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at UChicago Medicine. "I look forward to a substantial and successful relationship in the years to come which will advance patient care, enhance recruitment of strong residents, and establish a system of care between our two institutions."
