The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine earned a No. 15 spot in an annual review of the country's top medical schools.
Pritzker tied with the University of Pittsburgh in the 2018 edition of U.S. News & World Report's "Best Graduate Schools," which was published Tuesday. The results place Pritzker as the highest-ranking research medical school in Illinois. Pritzker was ranked No. 11 among research medical schools in the magazine's 2017 issue. The primary care program was ranked No. 34, down from its No. 20 spot the year before.
Also Tuesday, the magazine republished results for biological sciences programs that were released in 2014 for its 2015 issue. Those results placed UChicago's Biological Sciences Division's doctoral programs at No. 14. UChicago's paleontology program, which draws from the interdepartmental and inter-institutional Committee on Evolutionary Biology, was rated No. 1, and the Ecology/Evolutionary Biology program tied for 4th place. The biological sciences are ranked every four years; the next ratings are scheduled for next year.
U.S. News rates medical schools on a variety of factors, including their reputation, the competitiveness of students, acceptance rates, faculty-student ratios and research funding.
In the latest report, Pritzker earned high marks for its students' median scores on the Medical College Admission Test (averaging 520 on a 528 scale); the median undergraduate GPA of its students (3.88 on a 4.0 scale); and the average National Institutes of Health grant funding received per faculty member ($237,800). Pritzker tied for third in student selectivity.
