Rachel Spitz named UChicago Medicine’s General Counsel
Rachel Spitz has been appointed General Counsel for the University of Chicago Medicine health system.
Spitz had been serving as interim general counsel since February 2023. She joined the organization as associate general counsel in 2007 and was promoted to deputy general counsel in 2017. She served as the lead transaction attorney for the recent UChicago Medicine AdventHealth joint venture, announced in January, and as a key member of the planning team for UChicago Medicine’s 130,000-square-foot multispecialty care facility and micro-hospital in Northwest Indiana, which will open in spring 2024.
“During her tenure, Rachel has helped drive the overall legal strategies and operations of UChicago Medicine and provided legal counsel on a variety of matters related to corporate law and health regulatory compliance,” said Mark Anderson, MD, PhD, Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs at the University of Chicago. “She has become an essential voice in developing and implementing network, business development and physician alignment strategies, as well as negotiating and managing health system transactions.”
Prior to joining UChicago Medicine, Spitz served as an associate at Epstein Becker & Green in Washington, D.C., representing academic medical centers, health systems and other healthcare clients on a range of transactional and regulatory matters. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Miami.
As General Counsel, Spitz will work closely with the leadership team as UChicago Medicine pursues its strategic priorities and will continue to help steer the organization through a period of unprecedented growth and industry transformation.
