What
Match Day--an annual rite of spring when medical students across the country simultaneously discover where they will continue their training next year in hospital residency programs.
Fourth-year medical students submit a list of hospitals, ranked in order of preference, to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The hospitals also rank their applicants--based on letters of recommendation, transcripts, and personal interviews. The NRMP then matches each student with the highest-ranking hospital that accepts him or her.
Managed by the Association of American Medical Colleges, the NRMP is a private, nonprofit corporation established in 1952 to provide uniform date of appointments for residency positions in graduate medical education throughout the United States.
