Friday, July 2, 2004
The University of Chicago Hospitals has been selected as one of the best hospitals in the United States by U.S.News & World Report in its annual survey of America's 6,012 hospitals.
In the 2004 Best Hospitals issue (12 July 2004), the University of Chicago Hospitals was ranked among the best in 11 specialty areas.
The University of Chicago Hospitals program in digestive diseases was ranked seventh in the nation.
Eight other programs were ranked in the top 25 in the nation. These include: cancer, hormonal, geriatrics, rheumatology, respiratory, neurology and neurosurgery, kidney disease, and gynecology. In the Chicago area, both Rush/Presbyterian and Northwestern Memorial had four programs ranked in the top 25.
The U.S.News & World Report rankings are based on a mathematical formula that takes into account each institution's reputation according to a poll of 150 specialists in each field, the ratio between actual and expected mortality at the hospital, and a group of factors such as available technology, procedure volume and nursing care.
