My name is Margarita Guarin, and, I'm a pediatric pulmonologist, which means that, I take care of the lungs of children. And, I belong to the Department of Allergy and Immunology. When I was 17, and I'm from Colombia, and we have to decide to choose a career. So, my father had taught me how to take blood pressures at home.
And one day he said, well, do you want to come to the nursing home, and help me. And, we were supposed to do that, as part of service to the community. So, I went, and I helped him taking blood pressures, and giving the medications to the elderly in the nursing home. And I felt, that at that moment, that, that's what I wanted to be, serve people, and take care of their health.
Well, I love Chicago. It's the first city that I lived in, when I moved from Colombia. And, I always thought that was the city that I wanted to live forever. So, my two children came to the University of Chicago as students, and I was living in Denver, and I was ready to move to be near my kids into Chicago. So, this is a prestigious and emblematic institution. And, I was working in Peoria, and the opportunity to be here came, and, it was a dream come true.
Medicine is an art, and a science, so, I'm a little bit artistic. So, I feel like when I encounter a patient, number one, I want to know the story that they can tell me. But, every patient is different. And, I try to help them, through their problem, and do it in a very individualized way, almost like an artist that puts some special care on each patient. So, that's very important for me.
Also, the educational part of practicing medicine with patients, with the parents of the kids, even the kids, teenagers, for me is crucial. Rather than just giving prescription for a medication, and explaining why do you take that medication. Always also, give them an outlook of, if it's a chronic disease, how is it going to be in the future. So, creating a partnership with the patients.
And I think, lastly, is showing them that I care. I'm a mother, and that has been the most important thing in my life. And I try to project that with the patients, caring for each of them, like my own kids.

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
