My name is Jacob Wolf. I'm an orthopedic hand surgeon here at University of Chicago. Although we call it hand surgery, it's really all upper extremity surgery. We really deal with shoulder to fingertip, primarily elbow to fingertip, but dealing with all tissues of the upper extremity, whether that be bone, joint, tendon nerve, blood vessel, deal with it all.
Several things kind of factored into going into medicine for me. A lot of it had to do with my background. I always enjoyed science growing up, but I got my undergraduate training in biomedical engineering. So through that, I got exposed to a lot of different aspects of the human physiology, anatomy, but also understanding the physics and mechanics behind the human body.
And that's what really pushed me towards orthopedic surgery, is a nice blend of obviously medicine but also the structural and mechanical aspects of the human body, whether it be joints, muscles, tendons. It all blended very well with my engineering background.
University of Chicago, I did my hand fellowship here, so I had an excellent year of training here where I got to get to know the city, get to know the faculty here, the great culture of investing in education while also being-- to steal the namefront-- at the forefront where you're doing the up and coming new technologies, the newest surgeries, you're kind of pushing the boundary on a lot of things.
But to me, the city, the patient population, the faculty, all that together was a great opportunity for me and something that I really wanted to stick around and keep working here for.
As a doctor, you have a lot of the answers in terms of you know what the literature says, you know what may be best for a given X-ray. But I think when it comes to philosophy of care, it's a patient-centered focus where you give the patients all the information and then let them decide, even though sometimes it may not necessarily be what you would have chosen if you were in their shoes, but sometimes folks have different situations, different priorities than what you have.
So you can always be there to steer them and try to point them in a certain direction, but helping folks come to that decision where they feel like they're in control of their own care.

Some of our physicians and health professionals collaborate with external pharmaceutical, medical device, or other medical related entities to develop new treatments and products to improve clinical outcomes for patients. In some instances, the physician has ownership interests in the external entity and/or is compensated for advising or speaking about the entity’s products or treatments. These payments may include compensation for consulting and speaking engagements, equity, and/or royalties for products invented by our physicians. To assure objectivity and integrity in patient care, UChicago Medicine requires all physicians and health professionals to report their relationships and financial interests with external entities on an annual basis. This information is used to review relationships and transactions that might give rise to potential financial conflicts of interest, and when considered to be significant a management plan to mitigate any biases is created.
If you are a patient at UChicago Medicine and would like more information about your physician’s external relationships, please talk with your physician. You may also visit the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payments website at https://openpaymentsdata.cms.gov/ . CMS Open Payments is a national disclosure program that promotes a more transparent and accountable health care system. It houses a publicly accessible database of payments that reporting entities, including drug and medical device companies, make to covered recipients like physicians and hospitals.
Information in the CMS Open Payments database could potentially contain inaccurately reported and out of date payment information. All information is open to personal interpretation, if there are questions about the data, patients and their advocates should speak directly to their health care provider for a better understanding.
