Starting Your Recovery in the Hospital

Beginning rehabilitation while you are in the hospital can help you get started on your recovery plan right away in a safe and supportive environment, so you heal more quickly.

At UChicago Medicine, we will design a personalized rehabilitation plan during your hospital stay that is based on the latest evidence.

Do I Need Rehabilitation During My Hospital Stay?

Your care team may recommend you start rehabilitation during your hospital stay if you had a significant change in function or were admitted to the hospital for a wide range of issues or conditions, including:

  • An accident or sports-related injury
  • Brain injury
  • Complications from cancer
  • Fall
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Surgery

Continuing Your Recovery After Discharge

When you are ready to leave the hospital (be discharged), our physicians, nurses and therapists will create a detailed plan for the next phase of your recovery.
