Bone Density Testing

At UChicago Medicine, we offer bone density test (also know as DEXA scans) to support patient bone health. We have multiple locations that offer these scans. Our locations are staffed by a very experienced team of physicians, pharmacists and registered nurses. Our team provides quality, personalized care to meet the needs of patients and their families.

What is a Bone Density Test?

A bone density test or scan uses advanced technology to provide important information about your bone health. This test is quick and painless, using X-rays to measure the amount of calcium and other minerals in your bones.

Why You Might Need a Bone Density Test

Several signs may indicate the need for a bone density test. If you have experienced bone fractures, loss of height, or long-term use of certain medications like steroids, it’s important to talk to your doctor. Identifying weak bones early allows us to take action to protect your health.

Groups who need regular bone density scans include people:

  • Assigned female at birth (AFAB) older than 65.
  • Assigned male at birth (AMAB) older than 70.
  • Older than 50 who’ve broken a bone in the past.
  • Whose biological parents or grandparents have osteoporosis.
  • Who’ve lost an inch and a half or more of height from their tallest height (usually when you’re in your 20s).

The Testing Process

During the test, you will lie on a special X-ray table while a special machine scans your bones. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes. Our staff will ensure you are comfortable and informed throughout the process, answering any questions you may have.

Understanding Your Results

After your test, your results will be reviewed by our skilled healthcare professionals. We will discuss what your results mean and whether you may need treatment to improve your bone health. At UChicago Medicine, we are committed to providing excellent care to support your unique health journey.

Treatment Options for Bone Health

If your bone density test shows that you are at risk for fractures, we will work with you to create a treatment plan. This plan may include lifestyle changes, medications, or supplements to help strengthen your bones. Our goal is to empower you with the knowledge and tools needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
